This course is designed to show how normal swallow function may be affected by the placement of a tracheostomy tube and how the RCP and SLP can work together toward the common goals of: secretion management, airway protection, rehabilitation of the upper airway, and decannulation. Descriptions of exams performed by the SLP to diagnose swallowing problems and the use of treatment and compensatory strategies including muscle training of the upper airway to improve swallow function will be described. Current research on how the timing of swallow during the respiratory cycle may affect swallow will be discussed.
